The Stay Awake Association presents the situation, challenges, and real needs of the NAFO Orphanage located in the Littoral region in the PK12 neighborhood of Douala.
The NAFO Orphanage, founded by Marié Cécile AMAYENE, operates as a boarding school. Initially, in 2008, the center was an association that supported other organizations in the Littoral region. However, in 2015, it began to house orphans living in extreme poverty. NAFO’s vision is to support, guide, and shelter any child in difficult circumstances. The orphanage currently has 42 children, including a baby of 8 months and two children aged two and a half years.

Challenges faced by the NAFO Orphanage:
• The high cost of renting the space that houses the center (150,000 FCFA per month).
• The income-generating activities of the orphanage (chicken farming, pig farming, and fish farming) are on hold due to the lack of a water borehole.
• Among the 39 schoolchildren, 12 are not enrolled due to financial constraints: 9 children are in primary school, 1 in university, 1 in high school, and 1 in kindergarten.
Real needs of the NAFO Orphanage:
• Food: flour for donuts and cakes (for pastry training), red and white oil, liquid chocolate, corn, Koki, beans, peanuts, pistachios, fresh and packaged tomatoes, shrimp cubes, spices (white pepper, djansang, curry, round pepper, chili, condiment mix), carrots, bell peppers, smoked fish, sardines, chicken, meat, rice, macaroni, spaghetti, onions, garlic, soap.
• Materials: insecticides, mosquito nets, first aid kit (antimalarials, antibiotics, etc.), bleach, soap, baby diapers, scooters, metal scrubbing pads.
• Textiles: sheets and underwear.
